Once the industrial hub of the East River waterfront, the Domino Sugar Refinery was central to the growth of Brooklyn’s economy. The Domino Sound Refinery is a music and cultural centre that revitalizes the forgotten industrial space through the insertion of music programming. The project’s massing draws inspiration from the structure of house music. Just as house DJs finesse tracks into a seamless dance mix with transitions and beats, unique acoustic spaces are stitched together by the building’s existing concrete and steel structure. Echoing the refinery’s historic gravitational sugar filtration process, the visitor travels downwards through the building’s three sound refinement zones: Prepare, Play, and Perform. Overall, this adaptive reuse project is an inclusive space dedicated to the wellbeing of the public, and a place of musical exploration, responsive to the evolving needs of the artists and the community.
