A block-based self-build system that is flexible in expansion, the Gravity House kit, designed for use in Northwest China, offers people an affordable way to literally build their future. Light-weight aerated concrete blocks serve as both the structure, interior and exterior finish as well as thermal insulation. A simple repeating and interlocking brick system can build the entire structure, and moving complex elements such as plumbing and electrical into movable modules opens up opportunities for customization while also allowing as few as two people to complete construction. The project references local Northwestern Chinese vernacular such as the yaodong, to preserve familiar architectural elements such as the corbeled vault in a modern design. The result meets both the functional needs and aesthetic desires of the population demographic of this region, and offers occupants the ability to update their homes as their needs change.
